Mahabote

Burmese Mahabote: seven houses set from the day of the week you were born and the year of your birth.

Mahabote is the traditional astrology of Burma, and it works from a small number of inputs: the weekday of your birth, which assigns your birth planet, and a remainder taken from the Burmese year, which places you in one of seven houses. Wednesday is split into two, before and after noon, because Rahu holds the second half, which is why Burmese practice counts eight planets in a seven day week.

The houses have plain names and plain meanings: Binga the ruler, Ahtun the servant, Yaza the king, Adipati the master, Marana death and change, Thike the friend, Puti the wealth. Where you sit says which of those is your working ground. It is a compact system, and it is read that way, without the machinery of a full natal chart.

How it is computed

Mahabote, the Burmese little key: cast from the weekday of birth and the Burmese year, no ephemeris. A Wednesday birth after noon belongs to Rahu and is read in Mercury's house.

The seven houses

Seven houses, set from the year of your birth. Yours is the ground you work from.

House 1

Binga, the house of impermanence. Whatever sits here does not stay: a restless first house, good for starting and poor for keeping.

House 2

Atun, the house of extremity. Too much and too little live here; a planet in Atun overreaches or goes without, and learns the middle late.

House 3

Yaza, the house of fame. A fortunate house: the name that carries, the king's favour, being known.

House 4

Adipati, the house of wealth. A fortunate house: what accrues, what is owned, the master's seat.

House 5

Marana, the house of kingly position. A fortunate house: standing, rule, the seat others defer to.

House 6

Thike, the house of sickliness. The body's weak place; a planet here asks for care and gives it.

House 7

Puti, the house of leadership. A fortunate house: the one who goes first, the elder, the guide.
